I might just be healthier

For the last year or so, perhaps longer, I’ve noticed something interesting: I rarely get sick. I think I may have had a cold about several months ago, but that’s it. This is a new thing for me. There was a time when I use to get colds fairly often, especially in the winter. That just doesn’t seem to happen anymore and the rare time when I do get sick it’s over in a matter of days. Now contrast that a few years ago when I use to get sick often enough that I created a blog category for it. And that by the way is a very slimmed down version of the number of “sick” entries I used to have. I deleted a few when I self-consciously realized I sounded like a feeble whiner.

I have two theories as to why I don’t get sick as often. The first is that I’m a lot healthier and 50 pounds lighter than I was a few years ago. I eat better and I work out fairly regularly, so surely that’s a contributing factor. The other theory is that because I walk to work, I’m no longer exposed to the steady does of other peoples germs, colds, and what have you. I think there’s something to be said for that as much as I like to think I’m in really great shape. And I’ve been walking to work since last May and it’s only within this past year that I’ve really noticed a marked difference. Not to bash public transit, but it really is a pretty contagious environment where cold and flu like viruses must run rampant.

Of course, I think it’s probably a bit of both but I’m betting exposure plays a larger part. It will be interesting to see what happens when I start taking the public transit to work again later this year.
